Jessica is joining the lab for one year as an NSF GEO-REPS research trainee. We also welcome UChicago undergrads Keren Park and Jaslin Aguirre.

3/4/2020: This winter we welcomed new postdoc Dr. Michael Henson to the lab. Several of us presented at OSM2020, and Maureen visited NOAA-GLERL for the CIGLR Great Lakes Seminar Series. Gearing up for spring fieldwork, just a few weeks away!

7/25/2019: It has been a busy few months for the lab. We sailed on the R/V Blue Heron from Milwaukee to Duluth, hunting for cyanobacteria and other microbes. Read more about it here. We’re gearing up for our next Great Lakes Summer Survey aboard the R/V Lake Guardian. And meanwhile, our work with Jake Waldbauer tracking nitrogen into marine viruses was published in PNAS. Happy summer!
5/9/2019: We have just wrapped up Spring Survey 2019 with the awesome folks from EPA, the R/V Lake Guardian, Cornell, UM-Duluth, and others. Huge thank you to Justin and María for all their efforts at (inland) sea!

9/4/2018: Welcome María! Graduate student María Hernández Limón is joining our lab this fall. María was an undergraduate at Brown University and most recently worked in the Dyhrman lab at Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory/Columbia University.
9/1/2018: Summer Survey 2018 We – led by Sara, Justin, and María – just wrapped up Year 7 of our Great Lakes microbial time series sampling. We are grateful to our collaborators at the EPA GLNPO and the captain and crew of the R/V Lake Guardian.
8/30/2018: NSF awarded! It’s official — we have received funding from the NSF Biological Oceanography program to support our work in the Great Lakes. This project focuses on the picocyanobacteria, and is a collaboration with Jake Waldbauer and Anne Thompson.
8/14/2018: ISME17 Gabriel presented his genetics work at ISME17 in Leipzig.
